Volunteer for Camp Discovery
Our caring volunteers create a safe space where kids can try new activities and develop new self-confidence. Their care and support helps our campers make friends and have fun!
Camp Discovery’s success depends on the contributions of our volunteers. Campers receive medical care from volunteer dermatologists, nurses, and other clinicians. They also receive emotional support and mentorship from non-medical volunteers.
Medical volunteers
Dermatologists serve as medical directors of each camp. They are supported by other clinicians, including doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, nursing staff, and medical assistants.
Together, these clinicians handle daily medical care regimens and medical emergencies, should they arise. In addition, clinicians are assigned to each cabin of campers to distribute medication, assist with campers’ daily care regimens, and monitor their overall health.
Providing proper medical care for campers is vital to our success. It’s the chief worry of camper parents. It is a huge comfort to parents knowing their child will be cared for by dermatologists and other clinicians.
Non-medical volunteers
Apart from medical staff, Camp Discovery pairs campers with counselors, some of whom are former campers with skin conditions themselves. Our counselors provide emotional support and mentorship to campers, helping them navigate both social and physical challenges. Many return year after year, often forming close bonds with their campers.
2026 Camp Discovery dates and locations
Volunteers can select their week and camp location. However, there are a limited number of openings available at each location. The American Academy of Dermatology covers the cost of airfare for those that need to fly.
